Calling Ferguson to Hope and Healing

As I drove past the burned-down buildings and smashed-out windows that littered Ferguson, Missouri, with the remains of pain, distrust, anger, and frustration, my own emotions welled up with disappointment and discouragement. The discouragement came as I thought about the breach that had developed between law enforcement and the community, but also with regard to witnessing firsthand the damage done by the community on the community.

Many of the businesses that were burned down were black-owned or operated. It made no sense to me why so many more had to lose livelihoods, hope, and security in the face of an already deeply troubling community loss. But then again, hopelessness doesn’t always lead to acts that make sense. Hopelessness doesn’t always lead to restoration either. Rather, hopelessness, when left to fester, often leads to disaster – unless someone else (with hope) is willing to intervene.

That is why my time in Ferguson not too long ago was so important to me. Because despite the despair still smoldering beneath the embers of inequity (both perceived and real), I saw God calling His Church to be an instrument of healing.

Join me in praying not only for the people, churches, and leaders of Ferguson, but for our entire nation as we seek God’s hand of hope and healing. And thank YOU for standing with us as we seek to honor our Lord by bringing the timeless teaching of His Word in the midst of modern decay.

“Thank you for your Joseph series. The Detours to Destiny changed my life.”

“Good morning Dr. Evans. I read your article on your website this morning. You know just when and how to reach me. It's as if you are a part of me and you know what I am going through at that exact moment. I needed those words of encouragement today. Thank you and God bless.”

“Pastor Tony Evans, God spoke life into me through you many years ago. I listened to your radio broadcast from my little FL home every day. I had throat cancer. You made this statement: 'If God takes you down and raises you back up, He will use you.' I knew this was for me. It has been 17 years now that God took our business, my health, tore the foundation down and rebuilt it on HIM alone. I have had a TV/radio show called 'Jesus Talk Life' for 15 years, teach SS, and speak at conferences, etc. Just like you said, HE took me down, showed me who Jesus was (like Job), and brought me back up as an eyewitness. I no longer just hear Him but see Him. He uses me! Thank you, man of God!”
