Because of the commitment Tony and I made to child rearing while he was in seminary, we had to live on a tight budget. That meant we had to do something that was very difficult for me—we got both food and clothing from Luke’s Closet, a resource for needy families. I had a hard time with that. Although I had been raised in a modest family, we never had to depend on anyone outside of our home for help.
During those lean years, I learned what trusting God really meant. We had to trust Him for daily sustenance. I learned firsthand what the psalmist meant when he wrote, “I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread” (Psalm 37:25).
God delights in meeting your needs.
In whatever area of need you might fine yourself, trust that God can provide. Sometimes He supplies our needs in unusual or unexpected ways. Adjust your expectations and open your eyes to see His provision. Encourage yourself with the truth of Philippians 4:19 and know that God will meet your needs according to His riches in glory.
Why We Do What We Do
"My story starts seven years ago. I had a tragic fall that shattered my spine. After a 9-hour surgery, rods, screws and plates replaced what was formerly my spine. For at least two years of recovery, I begged my husband on an hourly basis to either kill me or leave me. I loved him so much, but this was no life for him. He needed a wife, not a broken shell of a person. However, his unrelenting patience and prayer started to give me strength. I turned off the TV and opened my Bible. I spent the next year giving it all to God. Jesus was my constant companion, and I started physical therapy. Although still in pain, I started to regain mobility.
During this time, I started listening to you on the radio. As a result, great blessings started happening in my life. I was able to return to full-time work. I was able to get off all pain medications, and my marriage was cemented. No man should have endured what I put him through during my recovery. He stuck it out, lifted me up and helped me find my way back to the Lord."
