Dear Friend,

One day a man went to visit his friend who lived on a farm. As he was driving down the long, winding road that led to his friend’s house, he saw a barn with over twenty different targets painted on its side. It wasn’t every day that this man saw so many targets in one location, so he pulled his truck off to the edge of the road and went closer to take a better look.

As he did, he became amazed. Each and every target had one solitary hole in it, and each and every hole was right in the middle of the bull’s-eye. Getting back into his truck, the man continued down the road to his friend’s house. The first question out of his mouth after greeting his friend was, “Who is the sharpshooter that can hit a bull’s-eye with every shot? I want to meet this man.”

His friend smiled and replied, “Oh, that’s me. I make every shot.”

“Where in the world did you learn to shoot like that?” his friend asked.

“It was easy,” he said. “I shoot first, and then I draw a target around the bullet hole.”

This story illustrates what our society has become today. We do everything that we can to fool ourselves, and others, into thinking that we are on target, when in reality all we have done is learn how to paint well.

We have attempted to camouflage our emptiness and failures with materialism, success, and other pursuits. What’s more unfortunate is that we even try to fill our emptiness through religious activities. We have learned to look, act, and talk like Christians, while oftentimes we are simply attempting to obscure the fact that we are a culture and a people tragically off target.

God, on the other hand, can hit a bull’s-eye with a crooked stick. Every time. And He has set forth for us a plan by which we can do the same, if we will submit to His way.

The way to access both God’s authority and His power comes through submitting to His rule. It is a critical element we often overlook in living out the Christian life, but it is the key to living our lives in total victory.
