There is victory in your voice.
That should excite some of you because even now, you are in need of a win in your life. Maybe your bills have bludgeoned your budget. Maybe your marriage is in jeopardy. Some of you have overwhelming and unexpected medical problems. Others of you have an adult child who has gone off the rails, living a reckless life and only comes home for a little cash to help them get by. We all have real problems, and most often they don’t come one at a time; they come in clusters. Such problems can leave us feeling crippled and useless. Unable to resolve those problems, we retreat into ourselves, overcome by grief and pain, hoping they’ll go away.
It’s like the man who goes to see the doctor, overwhelmed with pain. The doctor asks where the pain is occurring, and the man says, “All over! Do something for me!” So the doctor told the man to touch his knee, and the man yelped in pain. Then the doctor asked him to touch his ear, and the man screamed in agony. Finally, the doctor asked him to touch his chest, and the man continued to yell. The doctor then told the man, “Your problem is clear. You have a dislocated finger.”
Sometimes you feel as if everything is wrong, no matter what you do. It feels as if your life is broken and wherever you turn, it hurts. My friend, I have good news for you. You can use your voice to gain access to the power you need to be victorious in the struggles of your life. In 2 Chronicles 20:12, Jehoshaphat faced an enemy with numbers vaster than the Israelites could handle. What did he do? He turned to God. “O our God, will You not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude who are coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”
What the Lord says next is huge: “Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s.” The next day, Jehoshaphat and all the people went out before the enemy forces and gave thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, singing songs of praise. At that very moment, in verse 22, the Lord set ambushes against the enemy and secured the victory for the Israelites.
Their victory came from turning their eyes to God and in the declaration of thanksgiving and praise before their enemy. When was the last time you thanked God and sang praise to Him in the midst of your own trials? The Bible has a lot to say about the power of the tongue, and the better we understand that power and how to use it rightly, the sooner we will start to experience victory over the battles we encounter.
