Believing in the Impossible

When people look for examples of God’s supernatural power in the pages of the Bible, they often flip to Jonah. There’s just something eye-opening about God sending a giant fish to swallow a man whole, only to have that fish spit the same man out on shore three days later.

That’s just one of a host of Bible stories where God demonstrates His supernatural power. From the parting of the Red Sea to the raising of Jesus Christ from the dead, there is no shortage of miracles for us to read about.

Of course, science tells us that such events are practically impossible. But nothing is impossible for God, and since He is the author of natural law, it’s reasonable to conclude that He can do (and often does) things outside of that law. The question for us as Christians is not, “Can God do supernatural things?” but rather, “Why does He do them?”

He does it to get our attention. God has set in motion the natural law, so when He does something outside of that law, it causes us to notice it in a profound way. Jonah was in rebellion against God and refused to take His message to Nineveh. God’s chosen prophet tried to run away. God needed to get his attention so that His plan to bring salvation to the Ninevites might proceed.

God uses His supernatural power to get your attention and bolster your faith!

Sometimes, God will do something supernatural in your life to get the attention of those around you. Maybe you have a story about how God delivered you from alcohol or drug addiction. Maybe you experienced a miraculous healing of a disease or other physical problem. By performing a supernatural act in your life, God can open the minds and hearts of others, so that He might perform a supernatural transformation in their lives.

Perhaps it is helpful to understand God’s supernatural will in two ways: the circumstantial and the spiritual. He supernaturally affects the circumstances of your life so that He can supernaturally affect the spiritual destiny of others’ lives. He performs miracles in your life to affect the faith of others.

That’s why you need to be connected with others in such a way so that where your faith is weak, the faith of others adds to your own. And God recognizes that larger group faith when it comes to transforming groups of people. He transforms communities and even nations by virtue of the collective faith within those groups.

So, does God have your attention? He wants to show you His power. He wants you to strengthen your faith through the collected faith of others. So, draw near to His Word and His people, and you will find believing in the impossible isn’t so difficult.

Why We Do What We Do

"I worked for a concrete mixing company for over 15 years as an office clerk. For many years I felt as though I should be using my talents as a graphic artist, but was afraid to do it. Listening to you on the radio for the past few years has done a lot for my faith and last year, I got a job as a graphic designer for a marketing firm. Not only that, it’s only three blocks from my house, and I can walk to work! You are such a blessing. Keep doing what you do and let the Lord do the rest. "
