God of many names

We ought not be surprised that in the Bible the concept of naming goes from Genesis to Revelation. If I were to write a chapter on each and every name of God that appears in Scripture, the book would contain volumes and volumes. One of the reasons God gives us all of these names referring to Himself is so that we can gain a different perspective on who He is. The reason we need these different perspectives is because one name by itself does not fully represent and contain His majesty and power. One name alone does not fully say all that He is in terms of the nuances that make up the overarching term when we say “God.”

In over four decades of ministry and six decades of life, one thing I have become increasingly convinced of each and every day is that God longs for us to know Him. He desires to be known for all of who He truly is. It is in knowing Him that our hearts are opened to worshipping Him through understanding and experiencing the multiplicity and variances of His goodness and power.

Knowing God’s names is critical to our comprehension and application of the strength and victory that come through His multidimensional nature. God wants us to come face to face with His significance and substance. Yet to do so requires the knowing of His names. In fact, throughout the Bible, when God wanted to reveal a new part of His character to His people, He often did this in connection with the revealing of a new name. In fact, God has a name for the different situations that come in life, just as He did for Moses when he was asked to face Pharaoh in a difficult and challenging situation.

Moses knew that he could not go to Pharaoh and tell him to let the Israelites go based on his own name. This is why he said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” (Exodus 3:13). Moses needed to know God’s name. He knew that God’s power was attached to His name.

It was at this point that God unveiled one of the great names of Scripture, “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:14). It is the name “I Am” which showed up in Egypt to bring freedom to the captives and overpower the enemies who sought to keep God’s people from experiencing their personal destinies.
