A message from Tony Evans - A Historic Remembrance

Friends,

I don’t know if you remember where you were on August 28, 1963, but I do. I sat spellbound watching our family’s television in the front room of our row house—you know that room that is normally reserved for visitors? The one with plastic on the furniture. My parents and siblings crowded in that room on this day because it was a special day. Tears welled up in my thirteen-year-old eyes as I heard Martin Luther King Jr. tell the world his vision for freedom. To hear how he so eloquently captured and encapsulated the comprehensive context of our nation amazed me.

He called out for freedom. He cried out for futures. He dared to dream.

Memories flooded my mind as if hearing him again for the first time as I stood before his statue in Washington, DC, this summer. But one thought came to me the most as I stared up at his daunting face, firm with conviction and pierced by pain. It was this: The beautiful thing about this man was that all he did and strove for was always covered and couched in love. He refused to bow to the voices and principles of hate, even though humanly speaking there was a lot to be emotionally reactive about. Rather, he saw the biblical principle of love as the all-encompassing illustration and example to live.

There are only a few people like Martin Luther King Jr. who, in the face of hate, injustice, danger and persecution, responded with love in their day. It seems like there are even fewer today.

As I stood in the shadow of the statue of a man God once used to call a nation to change for good, it reminded me how throughout the Bible, God always looks for a person He can use in order to change a nation or a culture. In the midst of upheaval, confusion and chaos, God has a pattern of finding a person or persons, and using them to alter the landscape of a land.

He did it with Moses.

He did it with Joshua.

He did it with David. Esther. Jeremiah. Daniel. Elijah. Deborah.

And Nehemiah.

He can also do it with you. Will you be the one? Will you be the one to drive out darkness with your light?

Will you be the one to combat judgment with your love?

Will you be the one to help rebuild our broken land?

In other words, my friend and partner in ministry, will you be a kingdom citizen in order to help reverse the current devolution of our nation? I believe you can.

Thank you for standing with us, especially in such a time as this. May God give us all wisdom, grace and His love at an even deeper level than ever before so that we can reflect Him to a nation in need in a way that holds true to who He is and all He has called us to be.

In His love,
