Friends,
There is a story I’ve heard about Mother Teresa of Calcutta that speaks loudly to the matter of how little we understand the power of prayer. One of the rookie volunteers who served at the orphanage approached her one morning with a problem. Prior to this, she had failed to plan properly in procuring supplies for the daily making of food, and upon realizing her error, she approached Mother Teresa and confessed her mistake.
Now, if you’re anything like me, you would have responded by getting on the phone and talking to all your contacts, rallying the nearby orphanages and churches to get an emergency delivery of supplies so that the children wouldn’t go hungry. In other words, you would have attempted to fix the problem. But, as we all know, Mother Teresa wasn’t like most people. She looked that rookie in the eye and said, “Sister, you’re in charge of the kitchen this week? Well then, go into the chapel and tell Jesus we have no food. That’s settled. Now let’s move on. What’s next?”
Later that same day, a man with a clipboard showed up unexpectedly at the orphanage. He said to Mother Teresa, “We were just informed that the teachers at the city schools are going on strike. Classes have been dismissed, and we have 7,000 lunches we don’t know what to do with. Can you help us use them?”
When life throws you a curve ball, what’s your first reaction? We all have experienced out-of-the-blue catastrophes, and the natural reaction to such catastrophes is to problem solve. The hot water tank blows, and we call a repairman. A child breaks his or her arm, and it’s off to the hospital. But not all of life’s problems are solved so simply. The loss of a job when the economy is bad or a sudden health condition forcing someone to give up their livelihood can be very stressful, and the first reaction for many is to panic. Whether the answer seems clear or not, is our first reaction to tell Jesus? If you’re honest with yourself, the answer to that question might humble you.
But God is patient, and His mercy endures forever. He cares for you, and He wants nothing more than to step in and be there for you in those difficult moments. Pray, first. Pray, always.
To help you on your adventure of powerful prayer, we want to send you one of our most-requested sermon series of all time! It’s called Power of Prayer, and it’s yours for a gift of any amount to the ministry. Be assured that your gifts go to cover the significant airtime costs for both radio and television so that we can continue taking the Word of God to a world in need. Thank you, as always!
