Dear Friend,

I remember once going on a cruise, and shortly after boarding the boat, I developed a terrible pain in my mouth. I took pain medication, but that didn’t help. In a few hours, I found myself worse off, now bedridden and unable to move. The ship’s medic prescribed codeine, but without really knowing what the source of the pain was, all he was doing was treating the symptoms. Finally, I called my dentist on the ship phone and explained the situation to him. He said, “Tony, your pain is symptomatic of a deeper problem. It sounds like you have an abscess. Only an antibiotic will get to the root of what you are experiencing.” Sure enough, antibiotics fixed me right up. A day later, I began to enjoy the rest of the cruise.

Behind every physical manifestation or “fruit” in your life, there is a spiritual root. One of the reasons we suffer is that we are unaware that the pain we experience here in the physical realm finds its cause in the spiritual realm. That’s what the Bible calls spiritual warfare. In 2 Corinthians 10:4, we are reminded that “the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.”
