Although she was raising eight children, often single-handedly and with few resources, my mother did what was right. She refused to moan about our circumstances or my father’s long days and weeks away with work. She held the Lord and His principles in high esteem.

She feared, respected, and honored Him, and she wanted to bring Him glory. She wanted to showcase the Lord Jesus Christ in her life. And she wanted to pass on a legacy to the generations to come, which she has done.

The Scriptures tell us in Psalm 112:1 (NKJV), “Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in His commandments.” Fearing the Lord results in a whole number of blessings (112:2–8):

His descendants will be mighty on earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches will be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. A good man deals graciously and lends; he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he will never be shaken; the righteous will be in everlasting remembrance. He will not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. His heart is established; He will not be afraid.

Fear of the Lord replaces all other fear, and it places us in line with God’s plans for our lives. It connects us with the One who promised to bless and establish us when we keep our hearts set on Him.
