Life Essentials Online Bible Study

Before we get started, let me give you a definition of “calling” that will guide this week’s study. Your calling is the customized life purpose that God has shaped, fashioned, and equipped for you, in order to expand His kingdom and bring Himself greater glory.

Have you ever wondered or pondered the thought-provoking question, “Why did God create me and what is my purpose here on earth?” Many of us wander aimlessly through life not knowing our purpose in life—our calling. Part of the spiritual growth process is identifying your calling. Only God can show you individually and uniquely through the ministry of the Holy Spirit what His specific plan is for you. A calling is one of the grace gifts God has provided to every believer, no exceptions.

Reflect: Do you struggle with knowing your personal or divine calling? Explain.

You have been saved for a purpose. God didn’t take you to heaven the moment He saved you because He has something for you to do here on earth. Let me suggest a few ways you can get started finding the will and the calling of God for your life.

One way is simply to decide you are going to grow in Christ. You know what it takes to grow, so determine that nothing is going to keep you out of God’s Word and off of your knees in prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Himself to you and show you the gifts God has given you and the ways He wants you to use them. Totally consecrate yourself to God, and His good will track you down (see Romans 12:1-2).

Read John 17:4. I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.

Read 1 Peter 4:10-11. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Reflect: What is a biblical definition of success?

Reflect: What is the connection between your purpose and your success?

Also, do what is before you to do until God shows you the next step. Get busy for God, and you won’t have to find your calling. Your calling will find you, because the Holy Spirit knows where you live!

The future may not be completely clear right now, but keep at it. When you discover your calling, you’ll know it, because you will be more alive than you ever were before. God’s grace will have set you free to become all that you were created to be.

Reflect: Why is understanding your calling a critical part of your spiritual growth?

For His Kingdom,

Tony Evans

Prayer: Lord, help me to keep my eyes on Jesus Christ and listen for His voice alone! Show me that my calling is a gift from You and give me the perseverance to keep seeking You and to grow closer to Jesus. In Christ's name, Amen.
