Life Essentials Online Bible Study

I am sure you know this but let me remind you again—God is a God of purpose!

“The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation” (Psalm 33:11).

Everything in the universe He created has a purpose behind it, and He made us with that same desire and drive to find a purpose for our existence. I can’t tell you how many people have said to me, “I know God put me here for a reason.” That’s a cry for a calling, a sense of divine purpose.

This desire in us reflects God’s orderly nature, which is revealed in Genesis 1 as He assigned each portion of the creation its designated purpose. Light was given to dispel the darkness and keep it in its place. The sun was created to “govern” or give light during the day, and the moon was to “govern” the night (Genesis 1:16).

But it’s when we come to Adam and Eve that we find this whopper of a purpose: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:28). Mankind’s purpose is to fulfill God’s dominion over the earth.

Read Ephesians 2:10. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Reflect: When was your purpose established?

Reflect: What is the ultimate purpose of your calling?

In the same way that you have unique fingerprints and DNA, you have a unique calling, and I want to challenge you not to be satisfied with anything less. Don’t settle for a paycheck, a house, and two cars. That may be the American dream, but God has a dream for you that is bigger than that.

Reflect: What is the connection between the purpose of mankind and your divine calling?

Reflect: Do you know your calling? If yes, how has God confirmed that for you?

Reflect: If you don’t know your calling, what steps will you take to identify it?

For His Kingdom,

Tony Evans

Prayer: Lord, help me not to be discouraged by what other people are doing. Give me a clear understanding of the purpose you established for mankind since the beginning. Help me to engage in the unique divine calling you have for my life. In Christ's name, Amen.
