First Things First

We all have them and can’t live without them.

They’re our calendars, and they are everywhere – on the refrigerator or a bedroom wall, in our wallet or purse, on our cell phones and computers.

This time of year especially, our calendars become like a NASA countdown, as we prepare to launch into the holiday season.

  • Children countdown days till Christmas break and “freedom” from classes.
  • Parents countdown till a son or daughter returns from college.
  • There’s the countdown till Christmas Day…and then…the big calendar change to a New Year!

In these final days of 2014 some may be heaving a sigh of relief, saying, “Good bye, good riddance and don’t let the door hit you on the way out!” There is no question there have been challenges for many families this year. We hear daily from those who are grateful for an encouraging word of faith from this ministry. We are believing God for great things in 2015. I’m blessed to know we have a voice of influence in so many lives.

Psalm 90:12 says, Teach us to use wisely all the time we have.

Sometimes we lose focus in life and start chasing things that are not important to the big picture. What are the most important things you want to accomplish this next year? Write down those goals. Take the first things first…and remind yourself of your priorities every day. Your prayer time should include your “to do” list. Focus on what God wants you to do as a father, or mother, as a believer, as a son or daughter, with your finances, your hopes and dreams. “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). I can’t tell you what to “focus” on any better than that!

We are focusing on our goals for next year, too. Every day is a new opportunity to lift our voice through The Urban Alternative – a voice of compassion, of clarity with the Word of God, and of encouragement. The days seem to be filled with mankind desperately seeking answers to financial systems, to government, to family issues, but we know God has the answers in His Word.

I don’t know what 2015 holds, but I know Who holds 2015 in His hands. May He keep you, bless you and use you for your good and His glory.

I recall a time when I had some serious ant hills on my front lawn. As these ants served their queen, they built mounds on my lawn, turning a once-green lawn into a place of foreign habitation. They were building their own kingdom on my lawn, so I needed to address their presence. If I didn’t...
