He Comes in Your Hour of Need

He Comes in Your Hour of Need

A hurricane had rolled into town, bringing with it horrific winds and damaging rainfall. Those who had not evacuated huddled together behind boarded up windows and walls. Some even went to a nearby church seeking to escape the wind’s wrath in the sturdy structure.

A preacher stood in the middle of the room in the midst of this violent storm and cried out, “Lord God of heaven and earth, send us the spirit of the children of Israel, the children of Moses, and the children of the Promised land.”

At this, an elderly woman decided it was her turn to pray. She stood, and the preacher hushed to give her a chance to appeal to God on their behalf. “Lord,” she prayed, “Please don’t listen to him. Don’t send anyone else. Come yourself. This isn’t a time for children.”

Have you ever reached that place where your best contacts, connections, relationships, or anything else where you previously had put your hope just wasn’t enough? Maybe it’s while lying in a hospital bed, facing the loss of a loved one, or feeling deserted by someone you had cared deeply for. We sometimes call that “hitting rock bottom.” It is at that moment we realize how much we need Jesus. What other people offer in those moments comes up lacking, yet it is in those times Jesus’ presence is experienced all the more.

After all, Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would come so that He could help us. The crushing and the anguish He went through justified us before God. As He bore our sin, we also read that he “interceded for the rebels.” But what’s more, now that our sin has been atoned for, His intercession has not ceased. In fact, because of His sacrifice He now intercedes from a position of strength.

In Romans we read, “Christ Jesus is the One who died, but even more, has been raised; He also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us” (8:34). Through His death, Jesus secured our pardon. Through His resurrection, He secured our daily hope. He is the promised Messiah who not only came for us but also remains as our lifeline and assurance.

You can take comfort in the authenticity of Scripture; it is confirmed by history, archeology, and the sheer number of fulfilled prophecies. We can trust what it tells us about Jesus, and turning to Jesus as your help is the wisest thing you could ever do. He is uniquely positioned to provide guidance, comfort, strength, and power.

No one is like Jesus. He is—and forever will be—there for you… like no other.

Jesus’ life and ministry were like no other. His death and resurrection were like no other. And the prophecies that point to Him are like no other. No one is like Jesus. He is—and forever will be—there for you… like no other. Jesus is that “friend who stays closer than a brother” (Prov. 18:24). He is “a helper who is always found in times of trouble” (Ps. 46:1). He is your Mediator, and your Master. He is your risen King.

I recall a time when I had some serious ant hills on my front lawn. As these ants served their queen, they built mounds on my lawn, turning a once-green lawn into a place of foreign habitation. They were building their own kingdom on my lawn, so I needed to address their presence. If I didn’t...
