Understanding the Angels Among Us

Understanding the Angels Among Us

Every weekend, when I was growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, I would go visit my grandmother. Because it was the weekend, my grandmother would let me watch television, and I would watch whatever the shows were in the mid-1950s. If it ever started to thunder, my grandmother would say, “Tony!”

Even though I knew what she was going to tell me, I would reply, “What, Grandma?”

Then she would tell me to turn the television off. Yet, I would not allow the discussion to end there. I usually protested with, “Why?”

“You know why,” she would answer. “‘Cause God’s talking!”

“Grandma,” I countered, “God is not talking. I’m in the middle of this show.” It was then that she appeared in the doorway of the room, and I knew that if I didn’t obey her right away, she would be angry.

What I want to suggest to you is this: often we cannot see God’s hand at work behind the wind and clouds in our lives. However, let me assure you that the spiritual realm is real. God is the one who is ultimately responsible for everything that touches our lives.

Who can say that the wind is not the result of several angels flapping their wings? My grandma wouldn’t deny it! I believe that when you pray about the weather, you are doing the right thing because God releases legions of angels into the earth’s atmosphere to do His bidding.

If angels are so powerful, shouldn’t we look for them? No, the eyes of our hearts and minds need to be fixed on Jesus alone. The author of Hebrews told us, “He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3). He is the one who meets you at every turn in life with open arms of love and acceptance.
