Fasting and Praying for a Mate, Part 1

“When food was set before him to eat, he said, ‘I will not eat until I have told my business” (Genesis 24:33).

The Bible makes it clear that God sometimes calls people to be single. If you are single, you are to be a successful single and not a defeated one. Yet at the same time, we know that there are a lot of people in pain, because those who wish to get married find the options limited.

There is a good principle we need to look at concerning fasting for a mate. Fasting for a mate begins with total commitment to God. In Genesis 24, we find that Abraham was the father of 40-year-old Isaac. He wanted his son to get married. In this chapter, we see unfolding in front of us the divine process of hooking up Isaac with Rebekah. Abraham called his most trusted servant and had him take a vow that he would find a wife for Isaac who would not be from among the Canaanites. The situation suddenly became serious because now God would have to intervene to provide a wife.

The servant’s task was serious because a wife would need to stand by Isaac to fulfill the covenant given to Abraham by God, the covenant that there would be a nation of his descendants from whence the promised Savior would come.  A purpose is defined for this relationship, just as you should want for your won marriage relationship. Our commitment to God also includes the decision not to compromise.
